There are many places in Bintulu that can be made birding locations. However, the Kambatik Park where I stay remains the best place for me to carry out birding activities year in and year out on a daily basis. Stepping out into the jungle is not a problem because it is just at the back door. My policy of making the park a nature park has given me dividends in the many encounters I had with exotic and strange birds. This year a significant find was the Black-bellied Malkoha. I have just come across a photograph that shows the government quarters where we stayed in the early 1960's (Quarters No.4) and next to it the government quarters where the historical Mango tree was planted. This discovery ends my search for a clear photographic evidence of the tree and its location. The tree is still standing even at this point of writing. "Images of Bintulu Today" is an attempt by me to capture memorable images of Bintulu from 2010 - 2013 using the only available camera to me then - a Sony Cyber-shot. The images taken were shared in my blog 'my Sarawak (2nd Ed.)". This digital compact camera was very handy in recording images about happenings around Bintulu, its people and places, food, nature, river scenes, beaches, roadside trees, shophouses, townscapes and many more. To see the many categories of pictures using the digital compact camera please follow this link. Mahmud Yussophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03901454735603458784noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8192976732370168070.post-30563004915238760152015-11-01T16:18:00.000-08:002015-11-01T16:26:13.556-08:00Clicking around Bintulu (2008 -2015)

Since 2008 till today, I have been spreading the Bintulu brand over the internet in the form of Bintulu clicks. A blog that compiles pictures about the Bintulu story is entitled 'my Bintulu clicks' . Above are just a handful of pictures that I copied using url from the blog to this blog. Otherwise it is better to get more photographic memories of Bintulu by just visiting the blog.

The pictures are accompanied by short snippets and write-up to give some additional information to visitors who are not yet familiar to Bintulu. In this manner the blog is a wealth of information not available in books, and after all there is hardly any book that covers such a fast range of topics like the blog.

Check out the labels. For unique local names try these labels - azan, balem, umai, satay, tipuk, ong lumok, ketupat, belian,. The labels tells it all - from places of interest to Nature and man-made structures, try:- roads, streets, tamu, beaches, trees, flowers, mosque, cats, timber, ferry boats, express boats, and the list goes on and on.....Happy visiting Bintulu online! It's just a click away. The link is here.
Today, the park is called "Taman Tumbina" but when it was first started and opened it was known as Taman Hidupan Liar or Wildlife Park. It was one of my pet projects while in the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA). This project brought me places to Singapore and West Malaysia to see similar projects and learn from them. In the park (as shown in the layout plan below) there were many botanical as well as zoological attractions. One of the big attractions was the flamingo pond. The condominiums were a thing of the 1990's in Bintulu.
One of the many things that Bintulu can offer is nature. In fact, nature tourism is one of the pillars of tourism for Sarawak and is capsulated in the acronymn CAN (Culture, Adventure, Tourism). Bintulu as part of Sarawak also puts emphasis on nature tourism though at a secondary or low priority level, since Bintulu is promoted as an industrial city by the local development authority (BDA). This does not mean that attempts to bring back nature to urban living or environment is forgotten. I tried my own ways to bring this at my Kambatik Park. Thus from 2013 to 2015 I was effectively photographing and blogging on the birds at the park. There are of course other birding sites in Bintulu like Bakun dam, Similajau National Park, Tanjung Batu beach areas besides the Kambatik Park. The Shell SMDS plant located at Bintulu is the first of its kind in the world to convert natural gas into synthetic oil products. The products include high quality middle distillates such gasoil (diesel) and kerosene, as well as naptha, paraffins and wax. To undertake this project in Bintulu, a joint-venture company was incorporated in 1989 with the equity structure as follow :- Shell Gas BV (60%), Mitsubishi Corporation (20%), Petronas (10%) and Sarawak State Government (10%).
In 1992 I was involved with the landscaping of the administrative area of the SMDS plant (see inset). This job was one of the major landscaping works done by my company, Exxoplus Corporation Sdn Bhd. when it started operations in Bintulu in 1992. I was fortunate to have met Mr. H W Van der Woerdt who was the Construction Manager for the SMDS plant in Bintulu then. Pleased with my landscaping design proposal he later gave my company the job of actual planting the proposed design, besides just the design consultancy. This job kept me busy for the first few months since I started the company. Later in 1993, I did more landscaping jobs for the SMDS company especially in their housing area at Taman Matahari, Kidurong township. Below are some views of the administrative area taken on 30th July,1992 while on a site visit to the area.
This afternoon I saw these joyful kids playing at an open space by the village of Kampung Jepak, just across the Bintulu town. where my worker lives. I took a moment to take a picture of them. I was thinking of the nostalgic days when I was a kid like them spending endless hours playing with my brothers or sisters and friends. What did I do after school hours when I was like them say at the age of 4- 12 years old?
Under the category of 'Helping Out Parents' I did the following:

1) Collect firewood from a nearby sawmill that was located on the opposite side of the river. It required me and my brothers to paddle a small boat . A frightening experience when the boat was loaded and had to navigate the waves from passing ships . Never did our boat collide or sank. Thanks to the Almighty.

2) Sell cakes & ice cream which entailed me to walk for miles around the village or town . Over the years became knowledgeable about Who's Who in the village or town, especially those with spending power.

3) Water plants, sweep garden floor and help burn garden debris - almost on daily basis. That could be how I was indoctrinated into gardening. Green fingers are created young. Did Confucius say that??

4) Shopping for emergency supplies- cigarettes, sugar, milk, flour, fruits, etc

5) AOB - carry out miscellaneous errands like collect clothes from working bachelors who contracted out their laundry washing to my mother. Then send back the clothes cleaned and ironed .

'Just Having Fun ' Category list of activities:

1) Swimming in the river

Yesterday I took a 25 km drive north of Bintulu town to the bustling industrial heartland of Kidurong, a satellite town of Bintulu. At the very end of the Kidurong highway was this unique building. It's not that the Titanichas landed on Bintulu's shores. Rather it an ultra-modern building belonging to the Bintulu Port Authority, a Federal agency under the Minister of Transport that was set up about 30 years ago to develop the port infrastructures at Kidurong for the export of liquified natural gas. Thus it took a slow momentum to fully develop Kidurong into one of the most successful petro-chemical zone in Malaysia it is today. Within Sarawak soil there's nothing to beat it. Bintulu Port has been a major player in the gradual build-up of the immediate industrial heartland and also the outlying far reaches of Bintulu's rural hinterland.

Bintulu is naturally endowed with vast exploitable forests, minerals, deep sea, beaches and rivers. From these resources a very robust, diversified and profitable economic superstructure has been developed over the last 30 years that transformed it from a sleepy hollow to an industrial showpiece presently. Being a Bintuluian, I am witness to its evolution and at different times a participant to its progress, physical or otherwise. To me 30 years is just like yesterday when there was not even a road link from Bintulu town to Kidurong. But many more things can happen here because Bintulu seems never to sleep from the long slumber it was subjected to before the opening up of Kidurong.
From the foreground to the back of the picture is the largest installation of liquified natural gas(LNG) in one locality in the world which is constituted of three huge LNG plants and 6 storage tanks, maze of pipelines and process buildings and tall flares that can be seen from as far as 30 kilometers at night. The inset below shows 6 huge tanks that store the LNG temporarily before they are piped to waiting LNG ships that berth at the Bintulu Port's three LNG jetties. Bintulu Port grew rich due to income from the LNG export terminals where it provides berthing, stevedoring and towage facilities to the many LNG ships. Don't be surprised that the jetty terminals can load two LNG ships per day with each loading taking an average of 12 hours. This being the current trend. Since is operation, the LNG cargoes form close to 60% of the total tonnage handled yearly.
But Bintulu Port is more than LNG export terminals. With the further utilisation of oil and gas resources Bintulu became the centre of crude oil storage and exporting point, the off shore gas that has been processed by Sarawak SHELL are piped to other industrial users. Principally among them are the Asean Bintulu Fertiliser Plant ( that use it to manufacture urea, granular fertiliser etc.,) Sarawak SHELL MDS( Middle Distillate Synthesis) Plant - that process the gas synthetically to manufature downstream products like paraffin wax, diesel fuel, kerosene, aviation fuel etc., using gas-to-liquid(GTL) technology, Petronas Gas Berhad ( that process and bottle the gas for domestic and industrial consumption as burning fuel) and many other smaller refining facilites that uses the natural gas for heating ( e.g. oil palm boilers for the production of cooking oil) and Sarawak Electricity Corporation ( that uses the gas for generating electricity by gas turbines) .

To me there's no stopping the role that Bintulu Port will play in the future growth and development of Bintulu. Besides the petro-chemical industries Bintulu Port also handle bulk cargo and containerisation. The list of bulk cargoes it handles are : crude oil, crude palm oil, plywood, timber mouldings, sawn timber, veneer, medium density fibreboards, raw silica sand for export and a whole list of consumer goods both for export and import. The internationalisation of trade it promotes has currently made Bintulu into a well-known destination for cruise ships that bring visitors from far away destinations like Singapore, Hong Kong and many more other places in future.

The future of Bintulu Port lies very much in the forward thinking of its major shareholders as well as its other stake holders to stimulate and step up the further utilisation and operational infrastructures it can offer.

During the years 1985-1986 I did many batik paintings with culture, native girls and music as the subject matter. All of these batik pieces shown here were done in Bintulu. These were done during my free time during normal days and weekends. It was a means to earn additional income since batik pieces were greatly demanded due to its Malaysian or local identity and there were no other artist doing batik in Bintulu at that time. Later in 2002 my creative urges in batik were channeled into nature study especially plant life. These creative urges were associated with my contracting business since 1992 especially those works involved in the landscaping of Bintulu. I did little work on buildings or architectural subjects. Two paintings in particular are of interest. One is done in 1990 showing the Plaza hotel. This painting was sold to the hotel and given as a gift to the Chief Minister of Sarawak when doing the official opening of the hotel. Another painting was based on a picture from a Venezuelan friend of her hacienda. Doing batik was a money making hobby for me because almost all the batiks I produced were sold.
Having just graduated from Universiti Sains Malaysia in Pulau Pinang, I came back home to Bintulu as a young man full of ideals and energy to perform what was expected of a graduate. But not too soon because I had to undergo an additional year of professional study for a teaching diploma from the University of Malaya. In between studies and a term break I went back to Bintulu and in April'74 did a watercolour painting of a spray of flowers. These flowers were actually made by my mother from different plastic straws strapped on a long wire. She would combine many different colours of straw and their weight on the long wire made them bend gracefully like real flowers. Her artistry attracted me to do the painting in imperial size paper (see above<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , "tahoma" , "helvetica" , "freesans" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px; line-height: 18.48px;">).
To my knowledge no other persons or parks on this huge island of Borneo ever kept such birds before. As part of my very diversified list of duties while working with the Bintulu Deveopment Authority (BDA) in the 1980's - 1990's, I was made in charge of the setting up of a wildlife park for the growing township of Bintulu.
Thirteen pairs of the birds landed in Bintulu on 9th July, 1991, from which only 23 birds were accepted as in fine condition for payment purposes. Each pair cost RM 5,500 back then. Trust me, to fly these birds from Tanzania in Africa many pit stops were made. The formula one route taken were Tanzania - Dubai - Kuala Lumpur - Kuching - Bintulu. Remember that they fly with proper"passports" in the form of health certificates, certificates of origin, export/import permits and permits from the veterinary department and the national parks and wildlife departments. It was a taxing excercise but much worth the effort.
It was in the early 90's that I became the President of the the Bintulu Football Association (BIFA) which was affiliated with the Sarawak State Football Association. A major achievement while heading BIFA was when the full BIFA Under 21 team was selected to represent Sarawak to compete in Kuala Lumpur. In October 1992, I was the organising chairman of the Sarawak State level "Sarawak Cup" held at the Bintulu Civic Centre. The BIFA senior team won the prestigious championship title. It was one of my proudest moments as a footballer and the President of Bintulu Football Association.
There's no salary to the post. For the five years I headed the Bintulu football association I was assisted by very cooperative and hard working officials, members, coaches, referees, and team managers. The Bintulu public especially the business sector was very responsive to our fund raising activities. At the time when I decided to handover the Presidency to new blood, I left the association with a healthy balance of about RM 50,000 in its banking account. I thought that was the best thing I could do to the association which courted me to become its president in order to revive it just months before it was about to be de-registered by the Registrar of Societies. Well, that is all history now. During my time, Bintulu footballers were a much respected lot, and I felt great to be its President. I guess it was those secondary school days as a footballer that made me love the game and the passion to lead Bintulu football to state and national level in later chapters of my life.
It was my first posting and lucky me I was sent to my hometown, Bintulu. As a graduate teacher I taught there for two years after which I was sent to Pulau Pinang to take up a course on educational broadcasting. The two years spent at BGSS were wonderful years spent with young adults since the school was the only one that enrolled Form 4 and Form 5 students from around the Bintulu area. I taught History and Bahasa Malaysia subjects. In 1975, the teacher composition was a diverse mix of nationalities (see picture below) - Chinese, Malay, British, Indian, Iban and Melanau. As a young man and teacher, my time was very much occupied with extra-mural activities. I was involved in the Music and Singing Club and was appointed as Teacher-in-charge of the School Library. I trained the students in children's drama, playing the guitar and supervised them during work parties. During school sports day all teachers were kept busy with the organisation of the sporting events because as a tradition the school would invite the town population to watch their children participate in the various field events. In 1976, I was a proud owner of a Yamaha trail bike, the first ever to be seen on Bintulu roads and used it to go to school, picnics and scrambling along Bintulu beaches. Even though the time spent teaching was brief, it was filled with rich memories, happiness and the rare chance to help students in many aspects of their personal growth and educational up bringing.
One way was to play football with them. (see top picture) Often I would join them in the staff room during morning or afternoon break and night study time, chatting and getting to know them better. One of the many activities that brought me to town often was to collect mail from the post office, bank in money to the local treasury, visit students in the hospital or attend official meetings with other government departments. In those days, the school was the main source of "flower girls" and I had teachers responsible to get ready these girls in time and transport them whenever VIP's were to be officially welcomed at the airport. Being the Principal of the only secondary school in a small town of Bintulu then, the post was a very high profile one. You get to know people quickly and it worked both ways. The public would normally address you as "Cikgu" or teacher. In Malaysian society being a teacher is one of the most respectable job, not to mention the Headmaster. I was at the SMK Bintulu for about two years and by the time I finished my five years bond or scholarship contract with the government, I decided to move into greener pastures and joined a newly formed statutory body specific for Bintulu called BDA ( Bintulu Development Authority) in November, 1980.
The AGM or Assistant General Manager of BDA (Bintulu Development Authority ) post covers a few portfolios. The main divisions under my responsibility were low-cost housing, landscaping, PR and tourism, land matters and resettlement lots, administration and legal. The AGM post really kept me occupied and very busy in the various roles especially in laying the foundation stones for making Bintulu a beautiful tropical garden city of the future especially roadside planting, green lungs, and recreational parks, construction of low-cost housing for new migrants to the booming town, removal and resettlement of squatters, promotion of Bintulu as a investment profit centre and the construction of tourism related projects like golf course, wildlife park and chalets at Similajau national park. Sometime in 1991 I was interviewed by New Straits Time journalist Ahmad A. Talib about my work in BDA and Bintulu (see news cutting below). The interview says it all. I feel I have done a great deal for my hometown and I hope others will continue on with the show. Make Bintulu a beautiful, prosperous and friendly industrial city 2020.
<span style="background-color: #f7f0e9; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: "times" , serif; font-size: 18.33px;">In 1987 I took a challenge to go deep into the interior of Sarawak. My mission then was to meet one of the well known nomadic tribes of Sarawak called the Penan. With the help of a forester friend we left Bintulu at 7.00 am on the 29th of September, 1987 and arrived at the Penan's location around 11.00 pm at night. The journey to Penan territory entailed a five hours journey by express boat and then a gruelling 6 hours journey by landcruiser using the muddy , slippery and dangerously steep logging roads. But feeling young then really there was no fear or real fatique. Only excitement to see eye -to -eye the true nomadic tribe of Sarawak. Indeed our journey was met with success. We slept the night in a makeshift jungle hut and woke up early to search for the Penan settlement. At around 10.00 am the following day and after travelling for about two hours in thick jungle we stumbled upon a small party of Penan who led us to their temporary settlement.
<span style="background-color: #f7f0e9; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: "times" , serif; font-size: 18.33px;">The above is a picture showing a Penan family preparing the wild sago as starch for food. The Penans live by extremely simple means. They are jungle hunters and gatherers. They move about the deep tropical forests of Sarawak and seldom meet other Penan parties or other native groups of Sarawak. As such they tend to shy away from people and by remaining in the jungles most of the time they retain a surprisingly fair complexion. Inbreding is common among them because contact with other Penan parties are seldom. Thus the Penan girls marry early as the need to produce children is found urgent due to their short life span as a result of tough life in the jungle.
<span style="background-color: #f7f0e9; color: #4c4c4c; font-family: "times" , serif; font-size: 18.33px;">On this visit I met this young Penan mother who has just given birth to a boy a week ago. Without any name yet, my forester friend gave him his name" Masleh" to the little boy. To my surprise the family agreed. The Penans travel light. The most important things they carry are their bundles of clothes, cooking pot, blow pipes, knives and rattan carry baskets. All other needs are provided by the forest e.g. fishes, wild animals, fruits, sago, herbal plants etc. They do collect bird's nests,'damar' ( jungle resins) and rattan that fetch high prices when sold to rural traders. The Penans are extremely fit, stout and forever 'King of the Jungle'.
This year my father will be 91 years old come 22 September and my mother will be 88 years old on 22nd October. We took the opportunity to take a group photo of our big family, as it is not often that we can meet at one place and time like on the first day of Syawal when we see our parents and other family members to celebrate the successful completion of the month-long fasting during the month of Ramadhan. For many years now we always arrange this annual big family re-union at my parents place in Bintulu. Here's more pics taken during the occasion.
First, from its seas are exported liquefied natural gas. Second, from its coasts ( see inset) are exported the finest and best quality 'Belacan' or shrimp paste. While in Bintulu, this year opening 'Bubuk' or shrimp season have kept me excited to blog about the making of Bintulu belacan. In a year the bubuk season come twice and the next one would normally be in August. What makes Bintulu belacan simply the best? I think it is the waters off its 14 miles of protected natural park beaches stretching from Likau river to Kuala Similajau river. From its blue and unpolluted coastal waters the local fishermen catch the shrimps in nets and these are immediately brought to town to be sold. Another point worth mentioning is the distinct hot and dry weather here that is ideal for the drying process. Ultimately , I think its the legendary skills of the fishing folks here in the fine art of making the belacan as passed from generations to generations with some recipe kept a family secret. In this blog however I'm about to let some secrets out so that you can try your luck with the smell, the sweat and the blisters or else just fork out RM 60 for a kilo of belacan !.
At the early morning price is inelastic - it's a sellers market. Later in the day when the shrimps are less fresh and the demand less, it's a buyers market. However, when the weather is cloudy or rainy the shrimps can sell much cheaper because there's little sun to help dry them. But then Bintulu's weather is such that when the bubuk season is around there are always days when the sun naturally brings cheer.
The fishing folks have been kept busy for a full month now. Before the shrimps land on the negotiation table or roadside market the fishermen have packed them into plastic bags weighing a 'gantang'' which is equivalent to about two and a half kilo. The gantang is always the preferred weight measure for sentimental and traditional reasons, I guess. At the inset is shown the main ingredients for the making of belacan. These are - fresh shrimps, coarse salt, pounded red rice for colouring. The steps in making belacan can be described briefly here. Firstly, the shrimps are marinated with salt and red rice and kept for 24 - 48 hours. Then, it is dried on mats in the hot sun. Next, the men and ladies folks alike pound it into a fine paste. In Bintulu, people prefer to use the mortar from the hardest timber species here called the belian. The 'anak lesung' or the pestle is also made from belian timber as seen in picture above. It takes about 2-3 rounds of pounding to obtain a fine paste of belacan. The pounding process can stretch to several days.
Since 2007, I have blogging about Bintulu on a vast range of topics and these were incorporated in many blogs, thanks to Blogger. One of my favourite blogs is about the old images of Bintulu compared with recent or contemporary ones. It is a pictorial history of Bintulu that many outside Bintulu can sit comfortably in their arm chairs and time-travel to Bintulu during the 1950's in the safety of their homes or zoom into modern times in relative ease clicks away. Bintulu is my hometown and I think I will continue to document its history as it marches in the field of time. Currently Bintulu is deep into its fourth economic boom period and this boom has a much wider impact upon its societal changes compared to the previous ones mainly because the economic generators that push the town forward are scattered over its hinterland like its massive hydro-electric dam, reforestation projects, oil palm estates, timber exploitation and new industrial and township satellite zones at Similajau. Below are some examples of the pictorial history of Bintulu. For more pictorial history images please go to the original blog as in here ...>>>http://bintulub4now.blogspot.com/search/label/1950%27s
There is a wild life park in Bintulu or Taman Hidupan Liar in Malay. It was established in 1991. It was one of my pet projects. Sarawak is sometimes referred to as "Land of the Hornbills" and Borneo on which it is located is one of the most biologically diversified tropical paradise on earth. Thus it was a very interesting proposition those days to bring in the flamingoes to Bintulu, the first ever flamingoes in Sarawak and the great Borneo island for that matter. Upon arrival in Bintulu they were temporarily housed in a caged location . But once they were healthy and strong, they were transferred to their permanent home, a pond at the entrance of the park. The spot where the pond is found is indicated on the layout plan below. There were tons of pleasure in doing the wildlife park but the most challenging was to fly in the flamingoes from Tanzania. More details about the flamingo story can be accessed in another blog of mine as in here. We have done the impossible.
